 What is Haarlem Oil?

Haarlem Oil is a special blend of natural oils and sulphur. The unique laboratory process involved to create Haarlem Oil makes the sulphur extremely bio-available to the body. It is available in liquid form for use in horses, and capsule form for dogs/cats.

How does Haarlem Oil benefit health?

Sulphur is the third most abundant mineral element in the body. The body needs sulphur for several critical processes (listed below). When there is a greater demand for sulphur by the body (old age or rigorous exercise regimens) and there is not enough sulphur available, the body will use it for essential purposes first….depriving other areas like joint cartilage, skin, hair, connective tissue etc of the sulphur they require to thrive. This is why providing the body with a source of bio-available sulphur will sometimes result in multiple benefits. Some people who take it for joint health suddenly find their skin much better. Some people who may take it for their hair find that their nails are also stronger.

Besides sulphur, Haarlem Oil is also made with organic essential oil of pine, which is very beneficial for respiratory health, and it also alleviates muscle pain and arthritic pain.

What are some of the benefits of Sulphur in the body?

  • Joint and Connective Tissue Health (How Haarlem Oil helps Arthritis)

Sulphur is needed for the natural production of collagen and glucosamine, key elements in the structure of joint cartilage. Tendons and ligaments rely on sulphur for proper cross-linking (disulfide bonds) in addition to extracellular matrix proteins like glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and hyaluronic acid (HA), which are highly sulfonated and provide strength and cushion.

  • Skin / Hair / Coat Health

Sulphur provides the skin structure and elasticity at a molecular level. Di-sulfide bonds link skin proteins like collagen and elastin, and are critical for the skin’s strong, yet flexible characteristic. These bonds can be stretched, yet they retain their shape once released. Sulphur is often referred to as one of the building blocks of hair, with good reason. Hair is comprised of a durable protein called keratin, which is very high in sulphur. Sulphur has been proven to lengthen the growing phase of hair. When there is adequate supply of sulphur, our hair is formed using strong sulphur bonds. When there is not enough sulphur, the body makes hair using weak hydrogen bonds, leading to weak, falling or thinning hair.

  • Hoof Health

Sulphur to sulphur (disulfide) bonds are responsible for the cross-linking of keratin proteins within the hoof. These bonds afford the hoof much of its strength. If sulphur containing amino acids are limited, incomplete cross-linking can occur, reducing the strength of the hoof.

  • Antioxidant & Detoxification

In the liver, sulphur plays two critical roles. As a significant component of glutathione, the most prevalent antioxidant in the body, sulphur helps the body react to oxidative stress and maintain homeostasis, which is particularly relevant to exercise and ageing. Sulphur is also essential to the metabolism and excretion of heavy metals and harmful substances.

  • Accelerates Recovery after Exercise

Sulphur has been scientifically shown to offer advantages in improving recovery times and reducing the risk of injury and muscle pain. Some scientists suggest these benefits are linked to the antioxidant properties of sulphur, and further studies are currently underway in this area.
